Brazil: Mega and Diverse

The largest rates of deforestation occur in the Amazon and the Cerrado biomes, where the conflict between development and conservation is most felt, and where creative solutions, involving traditional knowledge and biodiversity, are most common. Nevertheless, most Brazilians live in urban areas located in the Atlantic forest biome, the most threatened, where only fragments of the forest are left.

In such a complex and large country, any strategy to celebrate the Biodiversity Day would have to be spread over the different biomes, involve different sectors of society and be seen by millions of people. The adopted strategy combines educative and cultural events highlighting the importance of biodiversity where it can be seen (zoos, botanical gardens and parks) and Internet interactive technologies of Web 2.0 tools, such as social networks and blogs, drawing attention from the media, hopefully TV and radio.

Biodiversity Day Actions

Brazilian zoos promoting Biodiversity Day activities

On May 22nd , 15 zoos will promote environmental education activities. The Brazilian fauna will be highlighted by educative games and competitions, where masks representing Brazilian animal species will be mounted by over 15,000 children who will also learn about the animals in the Brazilian zoos. Most biomes will have zoos promoting activities that will be covered by the media, making the message spread even further. This event is a partnership led by GTZ, Ministry of Environment and the Brazilian Zoological Society.
