The Action Day

As part of the global Biodiversity Action Day initiative supported by the German government, a special event was organised at the Karura Forest. Some 300 participants – composed of international CBD delegates, Kenyan politians, national and international scientists and Kenyan pupils – engaged in this activity, being accompanied by international media.

The Action Day in Huruma, an informal settlement at the fringes of the Karura Forest, was met with great interest by all participants. The Huruma people clearly demonstrated how "biodiversity and development" belong together, by showing how they depend on this ecosystem's services: Its water provision and purification, its medicinal plants, its animal fodder and construction material, the income from the sales of honey, etc.

Among the participants were the Secretary General of the CBD, Mr. Ahmed Djoghlaf, the COP President, Mr. Jochen Flasbarth, and various representatives of the German Embassy in Nairobi. The event concluded with a the planting of more than 200 endemic trees to help restore the Karura forest.
