First Workshop on Marine Biodiversity

To celebrate International Biodiversity Day on 22nd May 2010, the Biomares Project and Sesimbra Local authorities through its Tourism Department and project Blue Flag of California Beach in Sesimbra developed a workshop for scuba divers with the aim to present and raise awareness for the conservation of marine biodiversity Natural park of Arrábida.

The event was called the "First Workshop on Marine Biodiversity" and it had a special participation of the partners Biomares Project, Centre of Marine Science (CCMAR), High Institute of Applied Psychology (ISPA), Nature Conservation and Biodiversity Institute (ICNB).

The main objective of this workshop was to present the biodiversity of the Marine Park and the factors that mean most significant threat, such as those related to exploration activities, including tourism. After a global presentation on the local Biodiversity issue, the event was followed by a scuba diving oriented by researchers in areas with the greatest biodiversity of the Park.

The Participants were prepared to develop some techniques in scuba diving research and registration of data underwater. At the end of the day, again on land, the participants analyzed and compared the data recorded under the supervision of technicians and researchers. The last event was a debate about the role that scuba divers may have on the preservation and conservation of marine biodiversity.

The workshop’s outcome was that marine biodiversity is now understood for the Arrábida scuba divers community that discovered that the Arrábida marine biodiversity is unique in the European context. This workshop was a valuable opportunity for all to learn about the marine biodiversity. In the next edition, the Biomares Project aims to join different operators and scuba divers centers or schools to strengthen the training of those who have more influence in the development of activity in the area.
